Green Tea Weight Loss – Does it Really Work?

I’ve seen a lot of hype on television and the internet lately about green tea and how it can help you lose weight.  I even saw boxes of weight loss tea at my local Asian grocery store and noticed its main ingredient was green tea.  Maybe there’s something to this tasty beverage and the western world has just been unaware of it for many years, if not centuries.

Recent research has shown this tea to be very high in antioxidants which, as we’ve known for some time now, contribute to a healthy lifestyle.  Antioxidants have been proven to help prevent the onset of cancer by many scientific studies.  The Food and Drug Administration has even recognized them for this property.  That’s no small feat for any sort of naturally occurring element.

Even though you may see some people claiming it can cure you of cancer or a whole assortment of other illnesses, there’s no credible study to prove this fact.  But, there’s no argument it’s good for you, so drink up.

Will it help you lose weight?  That’s a relatively new benefit that’s being researched right now.  Some studies have said yes, while others are somewhat inclusive.  Let’s take a look at why people are looking to green tea to help their weight loss program progress faster.

First of all, let’s all admit, you aren’t going to be able to continue living an inactive lifestyle eating whatever your taste buds crave and get in shape with a few sips of some tea each day.  Any weight loss benefits from green tea will merely assist you within a much more comprehensive program for weight loss.

You’re going to need to create a 3500 calorie deficit each week if you want to lose just 1 lb of body weight.  That means if your body requires 2500 calories per day to maintain your current weight, you’d be consuming 17,500 calories per week.  Drop that to 14,000 calories per week and you’ll lose 1 lb of body weight.  It’s that simple.  Of course, you could choose to burn those extra 3500 calories instead. That comes out to about 6 hours of high impact aerobics per week.  As you can see, the most realistic approach is to combine some degree of exercise and a reduction in calorie intake.

Here’s where the benefits come into play for most people.  If you drink five cups of high quality green tea per day you’ll burn 560 additional calories each week. That will save you about 1 hour of high intensity exercise each week.  That’s pretty powerful when you add that up.  In the course of a year, you’ll gain a lot of time by simply incorporating this drink into your diet.

Please note I’m making the point of calling it “high quality” tea.  Not all products are the same.  If you’re buying a pre-made tea in the soft drink aisle of the grocery store, you’re probably not getting the highest quality and won’t reap the same benefits.  If you really want this to work, find a source online for fresh tea and verify it’s a trusted vendor.
